The Road to Becoming an Unlikely Real Estate Investor with Grant Francke

Share

Jonathan welcomes Grant Francke, author of “The Unlikely Investor: A Path to Financial Freedom Through Real Estate,” on this episode of Zen and the Art of Real Estate Investing. Grant shares his story of working a W2 job at the railroad and becoming a full-time real estate investor. Initially investing while still employed, Grant became increasingly passionate about real estate, dedicating more and more time to learning about the industry. His growing enthusiasm and knowledge eventually led him to leave his railroad job to pursue real estate investing full-time, seeking time freedom and greater control over his income.

In their conversation, Jonathan and Grant discuss Grant’s early exposure to real estate investing through his dad, how he discovered his “why,” and the journey to leaving his railroad job to invest full-time. Grant emphasizes the importance of having his wife’s support and how his W2 job helped kickstart their investments. He explains how he used seller financing for his first few properties after acquiring his initial duplex, the significance of creating systems and processes, and the value of building relationships within the local community. Grant shares his preference for keeping his portfolio local, transitioning into larger multifamily properties, the educational role of podcasts and books, and realizing that he waited too long to hire an assistant.

Jonathan and Grant further discuss:

  • Grant wanted more time with his wife and kids, which fueled his motivation for making real estate investing work.
  • His wife’s support was critical in pursuing a career in real estate.
  • Staying local and his knowledge of the local market helps Grant make deals he might otherwise miss out on.
  • You have to know your “why” if you’re going to be a successful investor.

Grant Francke may have been an unlikely real estate investor. Still, his dedication to educating himself and setting an example for his children has made him a formidable force in his local market.
